Chinese manufacturer TCL has won two 2017 IFA Product Technical Innovation Awards for the second year in a row. TCL Group Chairman & CEO Li Dongsheng tells us about these prestigious accolades.
The IFA Product Technical Innovation Award is sponsored by the International Data Group (IDG) and German Industry & Commerce Co., Ltd. This year at IFA, TCL will take home the “Quantum Dot Technology Gold Award” for its work on the 85- inch quantum dots X6 XESS. TCL’s innovativeness was also recognised when its Security King product won the “Intelligent Security Innovation Gold Award”.
Can you tell us about your company?
TCL was established in 1981 with just one audio tape factory. Now, 36 years later, TCL’s product range has extended to TV, mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioning, small appliances, LCD panels and even more. At the end of 2016, TCL was a top three global television manufacturer, and was also a leader in sales of mobile phones, air conditioners, washing machines and LCD panels.
How is TCL performing in 2017?
In the first half of 2017, TCL Group’s major performance indicators increased significantly. Net profit rose 110.8% year-onyear, and the company had LCD TV (including commercial display) global sales of 980.5 million units, an increase of 11.3%. In the North American market, TCL sales grew by more than 216%, and for three consecutive years has been named the fastest growing TV brand in the American market. Among all Chinese businesses, it held fourth place overall for PCT applications, and third place for all Chinese patent applications.
Can you tell us about your presence at IFA 2017?
This year, TCL takes centre stage at the IFA for the seventh time. Starting in 2011 when it first represented China’s smart manufacturing, TCL has been one of the biggest Chinese manufacturer at the Berlin event. TCL’s performance in the exhibition for consumer electronics has been stunning, and also proved that TCL occupies a leading position in the field of technological innovation. In this exhibition, TCL is showcasing its flagship product, the 85-inch quantum dot X6 XESS home theatre, which features leading quantum dot technology and a suite of features that breathes new life into television. The “Quantum Dot Technology Gold Award” was well deserved.
AS THE ONE OF THE FIRST CHINESE BRANDS TO HIT FOREIGN MARKETS, TCL’S PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN RECOGNISED BY CUSTOMERS AROUND THE WORLD. NOW, ALMOST HALF OF TCL’S REVENUE COMES FROM MARKETS OUTSIDE CHINA.
What is the future strategy for TCL?
TCL envisions it will be a future global leader in smart products and internet services. Keeping up its pace of innovation, TCL globally has 23 R&D centers, a total of more than 7,000 R&D personnel, and 2016 R&D investment exceeded RMB 4.27 billion. Additionally, TCL has been actively making plans for AI, big data, 5G telecom and display technologies. Also, TCL’s subsidiaries in multimedia, home appliances and communications have also launched an array of hightech products that have won praise from both media and consumers. TCL has become the star of the show and demonstrated once more that it is our country’s leader in high-tech product development.
Can you tell us about TCL’s international strategy?
TCL’s international growth has grabbed the attention of the global technology community. With 16 years in international business experience, TCL has operations in more than 160 countries and regions and has offices in more than 80 countries and regions providing products and services to consumers around the world. As one of the first Chinese brands to hit foreign markets, TCL’s products have been recognised by customers around the world. Now, almost half of TCL’s revenue comes from markets outside China. In the future, TCL will also continue to gain ground in Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia and in the other BRICs.
