The new Alpha 7R V from Sony features AI-based autofocus
One of Sony’s most recent releases, the AI-powered Alpha 7R V Camera, is the latest in the R series of Alpha mirrorless interchangeable lense cameras.
The model features the company’s highest resolution image sensor in an Alpha camera, along with a new artificial intelligence processing unit that is purpose-built for AI-based image recognition.
The camera offers images in 61 megapixels, with an eight step image stabilisation system as well as 8K movie recording. Other standout features include a multi-angle LCD monitor, and Sony says the camera is “ideal for professionals who need a first-class high-resolution imaging tool.”

AI processing unit improves autofocus accuracy
The Alpha 7R V offers users the “next-generation” real-time recognition autofocus, which uses an AI-powered processing unit and deep learning to have improved accuracy and broad subject recognition.
The AI processor goes beyond just detecting faces and eyes, by using detailed information and human form and posture. Real-time Recognition AF reportedly uses AI subject recognition, with subjects including animals and vehicles. Users can also benefit from continuous shooting up to ten frames per second.
There are a range of forward-thinking features beyond AI technology, including real-time tracking, silent, vibrant-free shooting up to seven frames per second, as well as continuously shooting up to 583 compressed images at high speed. Beyond that, the model supports high resolution focus features, such as direct manual focus and focus bracketing.
Alpha 7R V specialises in high resolution and detail
Using the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine, as well a 35mm Exmor R CMOS image sensor, the Alpha 7R V offers users 61 megapixels which deliver detailed images with high resolution. The BIONZ XR image processing engine allows users to take pictures at the highest resolution with low sensitivity. The sensitivity settings can be configured from ISO 100 to ISO 32,000 for both still images or filming.
The camera’s image stabilisation system features a high-precision image stabilisation unit, along with advanced gyro sensors and optimised image stabilisation algorithms. This algorithm apparently gives users precise detection and control down to the single-pixel level.
Users should also be aware of the camera’s updated Pixel Shift Multi Shooting feature, which uses the in-body image stabilisation system control to capture multiple pixel-shifted images that are then configured by a computer to have top resolution in one image.
Alpha 7R V offers “cinematic video capabilities”
As well as being a useful tool for still photography, the Alpha 7R V can shoot 8K resolution video, as well as 4K video. The model has a high-efficiency MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, and more features that offer high quality footage with customisable editing.
There is advanced subject recognition, which allows for real-time tracking, as well as the option to use the Alpha 7R V for post-processing and in-body image stabilisation. Furthermore, in-body Active mode image stabilisation allows for smooth on-the-go recording.
Designed with sustainability in mind
Professionals looking for a mirrorless interchangeable lense camera built with sustainability in mind should consider the Alpha 7R V.
Sony says that specific measures have been taken to minimise the environmental footprint of the product, starting with product development, through to the supply chain activity, production and packaging.
The model uses recycled plastic like SORPLAS for the camera body, and manufacturing is conducted at a facility that uses renewable energy. Furthermore, plant-based, non-woven fabrics are used for product bags.
The company says that it is working towards using plastic-free packaging materials that are protective too.
